This month OSX Fitness is pleased to introduce you to IFBB professional figure competitor Jane Awad. Jane hails from the great white north in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

But don't let this Canadian beauty full you. She isn't just another pretty face. Before earning her pro card to compete in the IFBB Jane was already an accomplished athlete. In 1988 Jane led her high school basketball team and volleyball teams to the Provincial Championships placing seventh overall in both.

Jane also set records in the javelin throw on her high school track and field team before winning the silver medal at the Ontario Provincial Championships.

Her athleticism didn't stop there. Jane earned a full basketball scholarship to Marist College, a Division One school in Poughkeepsie, New York. After playing her freshman year Jane transferred to the University of Waterloo in Canada. There she played three years of basketball with UW earning the honor of team captain in her final year. Jane earned Bachelor of Arts degrees from UW and continued with her studies earning a teaching degree with New York State Certification.

TBM: Jane, Thanks for taking the time to talk with us at OSXFitness.com

Jane: Thanks for having me.

TBM: This year at the Arnold you finished out of the top ten. In 2006 you finished 5th. An obvious disappointment over last years performance. Have you had time to critique yourself?

Jane: Yes, it was a bit of a disappointment.  My trainer Kim Oddo and I thought that we put together a bigger and better package from last years Olympia.  After the Olympia I spoke to some of the judges and they told us we had to come in a little bigger and a lot fuller.  At the Olympia I was 123lb and at this years Arnold I was 135lb very lean and definitely a lot fuller.  We will go back to the drawing board for the next competition and see if we can create something slightly different.  I think a mid way point of 130lb for my next show I will be dead on.

TBM: Did you get any feedback from the judges as to what they say or what the didn't see?

Jane:  I had some great feed back this year from the judges.  They were very positive about the changes that I had made.

TBM: Did you do anything differently with your training or contest prep when you were preparing for the Arnold Classic in 2006 verses this year?

Jane: This year's training was different because I was not training with Kim Oddo before last years Arnold.  Another factor that was quite different from last year is that fact that I have my own personal training studio www.trainwjane.com and time is of the essence.  Unlike last year I could eat sleep train and do it all over again without any worries.  This year was a lot different as far as time management.  We have made some alterations here at Train With Jane to relieve me of some of my stressful obligations during contest time.  I guess we all think we have super powers and can be in 10 places at once and juggle 12 balls while doing it with ease.  The bottom line in this sport is if you do not have your rest and down time your body just doesn't respond as well.

TBM: Did you work with a personal trainer and nutritionist when you were preparing for the contest?

Jane: yes, Kim Oddo

TBM: You had an amazing year in 2006. Tell our readers what other competitions you competed in and where you placed last season.

Jane: Last year I placed 5th at the Arnold Classic, 4th at the Motor City Pro Show and 16th at the Olympia

TBM: Do you have plans to compete in other competitions in 2007?

Jane: I will be competing at the Jan Tana Pro Show June 23rd for details check out Jan's site at www.jantana.com  My next show will be a few weeks later at the New York Pro show July 13th.

TBM: OK, now lets step back a little and let our readers learn a little bit more about you.
Where are you from?

Jane:Windsor, Ontario Canada

TBM: Where do you reside now?

Jane: I just recently moved back to Windsor from Brooklyn New York.  Talk about reverse culture shock.  I forgot how slow moving things can be in Canada.  It is definitely different being back home.  It is nice to be around my family.  I have 2 brothers, one sister 1, niece, 2nefews and 48 first cousins.  Yes, 48 and we all live in Windsor.

TBM: Did you play sports in high school?

Jane: Yes, basketball, volleyball, track and field (javelin, long jump,100m)

TBM: At what age did you decide that fitness and bodybuilding were for you, and how long after that did you begin to compete?

Jane: I started to weight train when I lived in Waterloo Ontario at the age of 16 and I loved it.  I met a guy there that thought I should get into bodybuilding and I thought that was a little too extreme for me so I never did it but I continued to train.  Years later when I was living in NY City I was doing a lot of modeling and happened to be working for a supplement company (EAS) that brought me to the Arnold classic in 2004.  I watched the show and thought "I could do that!"  so I started to train with my former trainer Mike Davies and he got me ready for a show.  I love it and have not stopped since then.

TBM: What was your first competition and where did you place?

Jane: My very first show was 2003 Bikini America in Redondo Beach California. I liked it but it had a little more of a pageant feel to it.  I was looking for a more competitive feel so I switched over to the OPA/NPC

TBM: How many competitions have you been in and how did you place?

Jane:

2004Mississauga South Central show and placed 2nd
2004Canadian Nationals 11th
2004 North American Championships D Class winner and Overall winner (Pro card)
2005 Arnold Classic (Pro Debut) 7th place
2005 Pittsburgh Pro 9th
2005 Cal Pro 10th
2005 Toronto Pro 3rd
2005 North Americans 1st
2005 Europa Super show 5th
2005 Olympia 16th
2006 Arnold Classic 5th
2006 Detroit Motor City Pro 4th
2006 Olympia 16th
2007 Arnold Classic 11th

TBM: Every champion has to experience some low points. What have been some of your disappointments since you have been competing?

Jane: I try not to look at the negative that comes out of each show.  Sometimes we can not control the judging panel and we can only go out and compete to be the best that we can be.  The best thing to do is to go into each show without any expectations.   When you have expectations the rug usually getting ripped out from under you and it is harder to recover.  I have to admit that I went into this year's Arnold Classic with expectations and totally fell short of them.  I will learn again for my next show not to do that.  You just never know what the judges are looking for.

TBM: What people in your life have been inspirational and supportive of your career?

Jane: My number one supporter is my fiance Chris.  He is there for me through it all.  My secondary support group is my family and friends.  I had a lot of negative energy surrounding me before the 2005 Olympia and I had to remove it from my life.  Since then things are totally different and I am a lot happier and more fulfilled. I am also very happy to be training with Kim Oddo, he is very good for me.  He is very positive and supportive as well.

TBM: What advice would you give someone wanting to compete?

Jane: Make sure you have a good support network.  it is a very tiring sport for everyone in your world.  You have to make a lot a sacrifices as far as eating out, hanging out with friends, resting, cooking all your food all the time!  If you have the desire then go for it!

TBM: If you were given the opportunity change anything in female bodybuilding, fitness and figure, what would it be?

Jane: I would make the judging be electronic judging without a head judge.  All the scores would be taken and added up and the true winner would win.

TBM: What do you think that this industry has to do to become more mainstream? Can it become more mainstream?

Jane: The IFBB  just formed a Press Commission which will play an important role in the worldwide exposure of and promotion of bodybuilding.

It will also focus on the positive benefits of a bodybuilding lifestyle to those with limited
knowledge of bodybuilding or weight training. Hopefully this will help our federation to gain some positive exposure around the world.

TBM: Have you done any modeling work?

Jane: I modeled before I was a figure competitor from the age of 15.  Some of my work is on my web site www.janeawad.com
