We met Kimberly only a few short months ago on Myspace. OSXFitness.com posted a message on our Myspace page asking for anyone interested in being featured on OSXFitness.com to send us an e-mail. Kimberly was one of the first to respond and boy are we glad she did.

Kimberly started her fitness journey in 2005 when she was 20 lbs. overweight and wanted to get back in shape. So Kimberly hit the gym and hired a personal trainer. She entered a few contest with some pretty impressive results. Fast forward 2 years later and Kimberly Castle is the cover girl of Oxygen magazine's winter edition.

What else does this 5' 3" dynamo have in store for us? Sit back as OSXFitness.com welcomes Canadian Fitness Competitor and Oxygen Magazine cover girl Kimberly Castle.

TBM: Kimberly, Thanks for taking the time to talk with us at OSXFitness.com

KC: Thanks for having me.

TBM: Congratulations for all the success you had in 2006. You have been competing for a very short time. What made you want to begin competing in contest?

KC: My weight loss journey started in October 2005 when I moved back to Canada after living and traveling the US for 3 years in my job as an Interior Designer. Living in hotels and eating in restaurants for nearly every meal, my only workouts consisted of an occasional run every now and then; I had gained more than 20 pounds. Having turned 30 in April 2005 I was no closer to reaching my personal goal of being in the best shape in my life. I joined a gym as soon as I moved to Calgary and hired a personal trainer. I knew that this was a step that I had to take. This was my chance to make a fresh new start and create a new outlook and healthy fitness routine for my new life back in Canada.

TBM: You have been featured on Bodybuilding.com and Shapefit.com because of your success in transforming yourself into a legitimate figure competitor. Tells us how you did it.

KC: Working out 5 days a week and starting to show some progress my trainer suggested that I consider competing in a figure competition. I quickly dismissed the suggestion telling him how crazy that was and that was something I could never do however, after some continuous suggestion I decided to do some research on competing and met with local IFBB Figure Pro Deborah Leung. She was a wealth of knowledge and provided me with the motivation and reality of what I was in for. And so I made the decision to train for my first figure competition.

TBM: I went from 136.5 pounds to 107 pounds in approximately 37 weeks, eating 3 big meals a day (that were not always the best choices) to eating 6 smaller meals a day. I trained smarter and harder with weights 5 days a week, made my cardio a daily routine with an active day of rest and a full day of rest every week.

KC: I am so proud of my hard work and transformation of my body is so amazing to me. Most women head to the gym and do 45 mins of cardio and call that a work out. That was my routine for years and I always believed that I was fit but my body never made the gains that I had always hoped.

As a result I also was featured on the Oxygen Magazine Fat Loss Issue in Jan 2007.

TBM: Did you work with a personal trainer and nutritionist when you were preparing for the contest?

KC: Yes, Debbie Leung has been my trainer, nutritionist and mentor. I would not be here doing this still without her support and guidance.

TBM: What motivates you to want to go to the gym every day?

KC: How it makes me feel and how I look now. I am really proud of what I have been able to accomplish.

TBM: You had an amazing year in 2006. Tell our readers what other competitions you competed in and where you placed last season.

KC: Alberta Body Building Association Figure Tier 1 – Medium Height 4th Place (my first show)

NPC Sacramento – Medium Height  6th Place.

Featured on the cover of Oxygen Magazine….every fitness girls dream come true.

TBM: What is your workout schedule when preparing for a contest?

KC: Typically a 5 day split training one body part on each of the five days.

TBM: How important is nutrition to you?

KC: Very, more so than I ever thought. I used to mindlessly eat for no reason at all. I am always very aware of what I am putting in my body. It is true “You are what you eat”

TBM:How many meals a day do you eat?

KC: 6 to 7 times a day and they are smaller portions.
This has changed drastically from a few years ago.
I used to eat 2 maybe 3 times a day and would find myself famished at the end of the day as a result would find my self over eating in the evenings.

TBM: How about giving our readers an idea of what you eat on any given day let’s 4 weeks out from a contest?

KC: 6 to 7 meals a day and a typical day is as follows:
Meal 1: oatmeal, egg whites and chicken
Meal 2: tuna and asparagus
Meal 3: salad with lettuce, cucumber and tilapia
Meal 4: tilapia and oatmeal
Meal 5: chicken and ½ grapefruit
Meal 6: tuna and asparagus

Plus I drink about 7L of water a day.

TBM: Do you have plans to compete in 2007? If so when and where?

KC: Yes, I will be competing in the Alberta Bodybuilding Association Provincial on June 23rd, 2007; my goal is to qualify for Canadian Nationals at that show and if I do then I plan to compete at Canadian Nationals in Edmonton Alberta on June 30th, 2007.

TBM: I may do the Europa in Dallas in Aug and possibly North Americans later this year.

OK now lets step back a little and let our readers learn a little bit more about you.

TBM: Where are you from?

KC: I grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
It is a city with approximate. 250,000 people. It is considered a major farming province in Canada.

TBM: Where do you reside now?

KC: I am in the process of relocating; I believe this could be considered one of my favorite pass times at this point. I live currently in Calgary Alberta Canada, this is the sister city to Houston, Texas and yes we too have lots of Cowboys and Oil! Calgary is home to the Calgary Stampede – The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, or so they say.

In August I will be relocating down south to Evansville, Indiana to be with my new Fiance.

TBM: Did you play sports in high school?

KC: Yes, in fact I was the Sports Representative on the Student Council.
I played on every team I could, fast pitch, volleyball, basketball, handball, track, cross country running....

I played fast pitch up until about a year ago as I was unfortunate enough to get hit by a line drive and broke my jaw…needless to say I had my jaw wired shut for 8 weeks and am a little gun shy now.

You thought contest prep diets were hard, try all liquid diets for 8 weeks through a straw. LOL.

TBM: At what age did you decide that fitness and bodybuilding were for you, and how long after that did you begin to compete?

KC: I had just turned 30 (so about a year and a half ago) and competed 8 months later. I wasted no time to get myself up on stage. I used to compete in beauty pageants so this seemed like a natural progression.

TBM: What was your first competition and where did you place?

KC: My first competition was with the Alberta Bodybuilding Association in June 2006.
It was very challenging to prepare for as I am not sure that I knew what I was ‘really’ getting myself into.

I ended up in the Medium Height Category for the Tier 1 Division and was so happy to place 4th!

TBM: Every competitor has to experience some low points. What have been some of your disappointments since you have been competing?

KC: I am green enough and new enough to still be excited about “the experience” so far.  I do have days when I wonder if this is really for me. Some days are challenging to get to the gym or make the right food choices but I think we all struggle with that.

TBM: What people in your life have been inspirational and supportive of your career?

KC: Debbie Leung tops the list.
David Ford a photographer here in Calgary.
Oxygen Magazine, they have taken me to that next level.
I can only dream big and plan for great things to come.

TBM: What advice would you give someone wanting to compete for the first time?

KC: Enlist a great trainer!
Seriously, without someone to help me with my diet there is no way I could do this.
And make sure to get references for them. You want to be sure they are helping you make good choices in how you approach this industry.

TBM: If you were given the opportunity change anything in female bodybuilding, fitness and figure, what would it be?

KC: That is a great question. I don’t think I have enough experience to see all the downside yet. But I suppose the one thing is I would really like to see people doing this for all the right reasons. I disagree with putting your health at risk to win a competition.

TBM: What do you think that this industry has to do to become more main stream? Can it become more main streamer?

KC: I certainly understand why more people don’t compete as you need to have very strong resolve and will power. From a spectator’s point of view, it needs to be more accessible, entertaining, put forward our personalities as competitors. Jenny Enders is perfect example of someone who has a great message, is herself and is amazingly entertaining. We need more people like her.

TBM:  Have you done any modeling work?

KC: Yes, I am a former “pageant” girl. I was first runner up to Miss Alberta 2000, Held the title for Miss Western Canada, Miss Saskatchewan at the Miss Millennium Pageant and was the title holder for Miss Model of Canada. However I never had as much exposure or success as I have has with fitness. Oxygen Magazine was my first Magazine Cover and I hope to have many more in the near future.

TBM: Where are we going to see you next?

KC: On stage at Alberta’s hoping to qualify for Nationals where I will compete for my Pro Card. That is my ultimate dream right now….I will be moving to Indiana to be with my fiancé and probably at the gym!
