OSX Fitness Triathlon Team Earns Some Respect |

Just one day after singing with OSXFitness.com Jeff Boehmer headed north to participate in the Parvin State Park Sprint Triathlon in Pittsgrove, New Jersey. Jeff was using this race as a tune-up for an upcoming race in Perryville, Maryland. Jeff was a little unhappy along with the rest of the participants when race officials changed the bike portion of the race from 12 miles to 15 miles. To must of us outside of the triathlon world it doesn't sound like that big of a change, but the reality was that this was a huge change that could play havoc with the way participants planned their race. Jeff's hard worked and training paid off as he finished 5th overall out of a field of over 230 participants. Yeah we know....This was only a tune up race. Way to go Jeff!
The OSX Fitness Triathlon team headed north on Sunday July 1st to participate in the 2nd Annual AVALON ISLANDMAN TRIATHLON held in Avalon, NJ. The team was using this race as a warm-up for the upcoming Diamond in the Ruff Triathlon in Perryville, MD on July 8th. The Avalon Islandman Triathlon is a sprint race consisting of a ¼ swim, a 12-mile bike ride and ending with a 5K run. Don’t let the distance full you. In the swimming portion of the course, participants had to fight their way through rough surf and rip tides to complete the ¼ mile swim in the morning tide. In the bike portion of the race participants had to be extra careful on turns because of sand on the asphalt. The OSX Fitness Triathlon team once again had another great day. Jeff Strojny finished 10th overall with Lou Winkler taking 16th and Will Vinton finishing 35th in a field of over 250 participants. In the Male 18-19 year old division OSX Fitness took home 1st and 2nd place finishes with Lou Winkler taking home first place and Will Vinton taking home 2nd place. OSX Fitness also took home another 2nd place finish with Jeff Strojny finishing only 3 seconds behind division winner Anders Christofferson also of Delaware. Jeff also ran the 4th overall fastest 5K of the day posting a time of 18:12.
On July 7th Team OSX and their support team headed south to Perryville, Maryland for the Diamond in the Rough Triathlon. This is the one Team OSX has been training for and one of the most elite triathlons on the east cost as far as competition goes. The grueling course consisted of a 1 mile swim, 27 mile bike and ending with a 5 mile race to the finish. This course was going to test how good Team OSX really is and prove to everyone that we belonged there. This was the first time that all 4 members of the newly formed OSXFitness Triathlon team were going to be competing together since its inception only a few short weeks ago. Team OSX came out smoking and put together some very good swims in the the first leg of the race. The real test was going to be the 27 mile bike leg of the race. Most of the team had not competed in a race with the second leg being this long. The team arrived in to the transition area led by Jeff Boehmer and Jeff Strojny on time followed by Will Vinton and Lou Winkler. All arrived on schedule and made a quick transition to their bikes before heading out on their 27 mile ride.
The first of the bike leaders started to arrive back into the transition area about 1 hour and 10 minutes after the left. Our own Jeff Boehmer arrived back in 1:14:08 with Jeff Strojny rounding the corner in 1:20:34. Lou Winkler was next with a very strong ride of 1:21:07 and Will Vinton rounded out the team with a very good ride of 1:23:10.
The second transition was quick and all of our team members were off to conquer a very difficult 5 mile run. The terrain was s little hilly but more importantly the heat was starting to increase quickly. Temperatures were expected to approach the mid 90's with high humidity before the race concluded. The running potion of the race was an out and back which means that all of the runners had to cover the same terrain twice. Jeff Boehmer was the first to cross the finish line for Team OSX running the 5 mile course in 35:17. That's a 7:04 per mile pace. Jeff placed 9th overall with a time of 2:10:32 and 2nd in the Male 20-24 year old division. Great Job Jeff. Jeff Strojny was next in for Team OSX completing the 5 mile run in 30:46. That's a 6:10 per mile pace. Once again Jeff proved that he is one of the best runners out there and why he is a member of Team OSX. Jeff finished 15th overall with a time of 2:15:30 and placed 3rd in the Male 20-24 year old division. Lou Winkler was next for Team OSX running the 5 mile portion in 32:31. That's a fast 6:29 per mile pace. Lou (Cuffy) Winkler placed 34th overall with a time of 2:22:53 and earned him a 4th place finish in the Male 0-19 year old division. Will Vinton finished up the 5 mile run with a time of 35:31. For Will the 7:07 per mile pace earned him an overall place of 50th. Will also placed 6th in the Male 0-19 year old division and helped Team OSX earn one of the best team performances of the day. It should also be noted that Will is our youngest team member and has been putting in some serious numbers all season. Congratulations to Team OSX with a great performance and a great job supporting one another. This was the first time all members ran in the same race together and we hope to have many more. .
Someone tapped me on the shoulder and pointed out Mayor Adrian M Fenty to me just before he entered the water for the 1 mile swim portion of the the race. Mayor Fenty is the current mayor of Washington DC and was there to participate in the triathlon. At first I thought this was the usual publicity seeking politician that would run a small portion of the race and then bale out at some point never to be seen again. Boy was I wrong. Mayor Fenty attacked the course with a vengeance and for the next few hours he was like everyone else. He was an athlete. Mayor Fenty completed the 1 mile swim in 28:01. He had a nice transition to the bike and smoked the 27 mile ride in 1:19:14. The 37 year old Mayor had another smooth transition and headed out for the 5 mile run. In just 36:16 the Mayor crossed the finish line giving him an overall 53rd place in 2:26:41. He completed the 5 mile run at a 7:16 per mile pace. Nice job Mayor. Now you may ask if we are sucking up by including the mayor in this article. Our answer is simply"No". I will say only this, next time you are voting for a politician and he/she includes health and fitness on their agenda, can they do a triathlon?
