This month The Bald Man had the chance to talk to Canadian Fitness and Figure Competitor Sherry Ann Boudreau. Sherry is a mother of three and works as a Personal Trainer in her home town of Coquitlam, BC Canada. Sherry has apppeared in countless magazines and competes as a professional in the WNBF in both figure and fitness. That means that this Canadian beauty is 100% natural. So sit back and enjoy as I go one on one with Sherry Ann Boudreau.

TBM: Sherry thanks for taking the time to talk to us.

Sherry: You're Welcome

TBM: To start things off, why don't you introduce yourself to our readers and tell us a little about your self.

Sherry: I am 38 years old a mother to three ages 19, 12, and 7.  I live in Coquitlam, BC Canada and I have been employed as an aerobics instructor and Personal trainer for Fitness World since 1996.I compete Nationally in Fitness and Figure competitions and I currently hold a WNBF Pro card in both categories.

TBM: Were you active when you were younger?

Sherry: I played basketball, soccer, volleyball and track. I am also an avid Slalom skier and I love jumping off the ramps.

TBM: What were the reasons that you began training?

Sherry: I had gained about 35 lbs after my second child and I decided to see if I could look like the woman in Oxygen in a 12 week challenge at Fitness World. This was a personal goal that I achieved and ended competing in my first sport aerobic event in 1998.

TBM: At what age did you first realize that fitness and bodybuilding were for you, and how long after that did you begin competing?

Sherry: I realized this was an exciting industry and after my third child in 2002. I was on my way to competing in my first fitness show which lead me to earning a pro card in the WNBF on my third show.  That very same day I entered a figure category and I also placed 1st winning yet another WNBF Pro card.

TBM: What people in your life have been inspirational and supportive of your training?

Sherry: Mainly my children, but my sponsors Fitness World whom I am employed by have been a big supporter in my competitive years and they are like family to me.
WNBF Pro Bodybuilder Dave Goodin also known as the Texas Shredder. I moved out to Austin, TX for 10 months in 2003 to shadow him and to be trained by him which led me to competing in novice bodybuilding.
Mike Davies has brought me to a whole new level in my physique and I have learned so much from him in the last year.
My choreographer Tammy Rosiek has been a constant mentor in my life as she is my very good friend for over 12 years now and she is a very talented choreographer.

TBM: How many competitions have you been in, and how did you place?

Sherry: Well there are over 28 events to date that I have competed in, which is too long to list. However, I placed 1st in fitness at the CNBF Can-Am in 2002, 1st in Figure at the ANBC Western Canadians in 2002, 1st in WNBF Pro MS World Exercise 2002-/03, 1st in INBF NATURALMANIA 2002, 1st in INBF Novice Bodybuilding in 2004, 1st in Sandra Wickham Fall Classic and Overall in 2005, 1st in Texas Shredder fitness 2005/2006, and the rest are between 2nd place and 5th place.

TBM: Based on your experience, what do you think is the biggest mistake that novice athletes make early on in their careers.

Sherry: I haven't come across any people that felt they made mistakes so I can't speak for them, but for me it was competing in too many events in one year. This does not allow your body time to heal and grow.

TBM: If you could give advice to that girl or woman out there who is reading the magazines, who is reading this interview, and who is considering training or competition - what would it be? What things should they be thinking about, and what should they be prepared to do, prior to committing to this lifestyle?

Sherry: I would say to compete for the love it and not to win.  Once you are on stage it can be very critical and if you are week minded or at the very least insecure it will take you down.  Always remember that we are all equal and not one person is better than the other as we are all unique individuals with special qualities.  You are already winner once you complete the weeks of training dieting and you step up on that stage. Keep your head high and smile. You made it there and that is a great achievement in itself.

TBM: If you could change anything about female fitness and bodybuilding today, what would it be?

Sherry: I would group with each federation and stand together with consistency in what a fitness girl and figure girl should look like. Fitness girls should look fit and softer then figure girls. Figure should look leaner but without masculinity and muscle separation and bodybuilders should be lean, vascular and separated. This should always be consistent with every federation and be made to keep it real, natural and healthy.

TBM: Do you do any modeling?

Sherry: I do a little for fitness clothing for companies such as BEBE Sport, Fitness World, Ujena and contest posters for the WNBF/INBF. However, I am not concentrating on modeling as competing is my passion. Photographers always want you to get down and dirty with pictures when you start competing and I don't want to expose myself in that manner as I am an athlete not to mention the fact that as a mother I intend on being a good role model for my children.

TBM: Over 60% of Americans are considered overweight or obese and the numbers continue to rise. Is the problem similar in Canada?

Sherry: I think the problem has increased in many areas of the world as the fast food chains keep rising. Let's face it; it is cheap for kids to go there and they are found on every street corner.  With both parents working these days there is know one home to cook for the kids.

TBM: You are certified in several areas of fitness. What are they?

Sherry: BCRPA certified Elite Trainer
BCRPA certified Aerobics Instructor
Zone certified Meal planner

TBM: How do Canadian fitness certifications differ from those in the US?

Sherry: In Canada you are required to take steps towards getting certified as well as having both CPR and Fitness First Aid.  Each year you renew you must have done a certain amount of courses to get credits to keep up your certifications.  That includes repeating the CPR and FFA each year to stay up to date.

TBM: Many women who visit OSX Fitness.com write to us that they really don't want to weight train because the think they are going to get to big. What do you tell your female clients when they bring that up?

Sherry: Impossible unless you have crazy genetics or you are taking something.  Women do not have enough testosterone in their body to build muscle like men.

TBM: You run/ Elite Boot Camp with Sherry Boudreau/. Can you tell us about the program?

Sherry: My program is based on working with your own bodyweight such as push ups, lunges, squats and ply metrics.  We also incorporate a bit of punching and skipping for interval training.  I spend a good 20 minutes working the core with the people partnering up with each other and using resistance techniques. I don't count reps or sets, we just work to failure. It has just recently been added to all the 12 Fitness world locations and I am going to be getting it BCRPA registered for trainer to get credits for it when participating in my master class.

TBM: What types of clients sign up for your Boot Camp?

Sherry: It ranges from police, athletes, teen’s, beginners and even people that have just plateau and want something different. There is a good mixture of men and woman.

TBM: Can you give us an example of one of your Boot Camp workouts?

Sherry: I start out teaching three levels of squats, lunges, pump lunges and diagonal lunges. I then introduce some active stretches as well as isometrics.  After that we pick up the past with plyometrics, run relays with some upper body plyometrics then we get into some cardio kick box moves. After that we hit the floor for core work and then static stretching.  Each time is different but still incorporates the basics above.

TBM: What contests do plan on competing in this year?

Sherry: I am competing and preparing for the Canadian Nationals in June 2007. I am going after IFBB Pro card in both fitness and figure.  After that I will hit the BC Provincials again in July 2007 and if all goes well I may just try for Ms Fitness Worlds. Then I am going to motorcycle school to get my license. I want to be riding by summer.

TBM: When can we expect to see you in the states again?

Sherry: I am heading to Columbus, Ohio for the weekend of January 25-28th to see my trainer Mike Davies and then I plan to go to Austin, TX in May to hit the Texas Shredder once again to get me qualified for MS Fitness World held in Las Vegas in September 2007.

TBM: Thanks Sherry for your time. How do our readers contact you?

Sherry: Thank you for having me! I can reached via email at
